On May 16, 1946, unlikely hero/pinch runner Jeff Cross scored the winning run in a 9-8 victory over the Braves in Boston by stealing home in the top of the tenth inning. Cross, whose given name was Joffre, was a utility man that seen very little playing time in a career that lasted just four years in the big leagues. His career batting average sits at .162, and in the eyes of some he might be considered just another player that came and went. In the eyes of this Cardinals fan he is a guy who helped the Cardinals win an intense contest, during a season that they would go onto win the World Series.
