On July 30, 1933, in the first game of a doubleheader at Sportsman's Park, Dizzy Dean struckout 17 batters in an 8-2 win over the Cubs. The 17 K's set a new Major League record, it wasn't the only record broken that day catcher Jimmie Wilson's 18 putouts also set a new major league mark. Dean was on extended rest and he came back firing on all cylinders, he his blew his fastball by batter after batter and his curveball was equally effective. While both records have since been broken it was one helluva day for the boys down at Sportsman's Park.
